The  launch of Xperia Play brought another dimension to android market. The launch attracted many hand held gamers. Seeing the potential of mobile gaming market, hardware manufactures came up with really interesting gaming oriented gadgets.  Many Kickstarter companies targeted android platform in order to relish their dreams of making their own gaming console. Here is a list of the most interesting available and upcoming android gaming console.

Archos GamePad

Launched last year in December across Europe and in U.S this month. Equipped with ARM cortex A9 processor clocked at a speed of  1.6ghz, quad core  mali 400 GPU and 1GB of DDR 3 RAM. A 7″ inch 5 point multitouch screen with a resolution of 1024×600. More over, it has a flash memory of 8GB which can be expandable to 64 GB. It runs the latest Android 4.1 Jelly bean operating system. This handheld android gaming console comes up with an app which lets you to map on screen controls.  All in all its not that expensive you can get a pretty handy console at an affordable price of $149.

 

Wikipad

WikiPad is an upcoming android based gaming console designed by WikiPad inc. This tablet is powered with nvidia Tegra 3 quad core processor, 1GB of RAM and flash memorey of 16GB which can be expandable to 64GB. This tablets comes up with a Playstation mobile, through which you can play playstation 1 titles on your tablet. It also comes up with Sony’s game streaming service Gaikai. Unlike Archos GamePad this tablet comes up with a detachable game keypad, which really gives its user a lot of freedom to use the device in any way he/she likes. WikiPad is expected to hit the markets by 2nd quarter this year.

 

Nvidia’s Project sheild

Nvidia practically entered the game console industry after unveiling the Project Sheild at this years CES. This android based gaming console would be the first ever device to be equipped with nvidia tegra 4 processor. This console is more like an Xbox 360 controller with a screen attached to it.  Its powerful enough to play 4k HD movies as well. This device has a unique feature that isn’t present in any of the gaming tablets, which is its ability to stream games from a PC having a Geforce GTX GPU. This device will be coming along with nvidia’s grid which is their cloud gaming service.

 

OUYA

Ouya is traditional gaming console powered with android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It is powered with nvidia tegra quad core processor which is clocked at a speed of 1.7ghz .It also features 1GB of  DDR3 Ram and an HDMI input for display.  This console is available for developers to develop some custom software and games exclusively for OUYA. This console uses TV as an output, so it would be interesting how key mapping would be done on non OUYA compatible games. The retailer unit would be hitting the market in June this year. Its good to know that OUYA have some titles like Cave produced by legendary game Producer Ron Gilbert. Ouya would be available at an introductory price of $99.

UNU is a 3 in 1 system that can be used as tablet, smart TV and gaming console. This product is designed by a German based company Sunflex europe and Snakebyte which specializes in making gaming accessories.  This tablet can turn your TV into a smart TV and a game console through a docking station. A user can use an air mouse, which has a keyboard as well at its back or a Bluetooth controller as an input. This game console would be coming up with a key mapping application.

 

 

 

Game Stick

Game Stick is the smallest android game console among this list. This console is of the same size as any regular USB thumb drive. Game Stick have a USB interface which means it can be hooked up in any TV offering USB play. It uses a game controller as input, which looks more of a retro Nintendo game controller. Some rumors are surrounding that this kick starter project might be abandoned due to lack of funding.
